John Michael Gattis, 70, died in Conroe, Texas on September 2, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Known as Mike to his friends, "Bubba" to his sister and "Papa" to his children and grandchildren, he was loved by many.

Mike was born in Amarillo and lived in several Texas cities before moving to Roswell, New Mexico where he played football both in high school and at New Mexico Military Institute. He loved his time in Roswell and made many long-term friends there. He completed his degree at North Texas State University on a football scholarship. He delighted in relating stories about his North Texas teammates including "Mean" Joe Greene and had many fond memories of those days. Mike maintained a lifelong love affair with sports, both as a player and a fan, and was quick to accept any invitation that involved competition.

Following graduation Mike began his long career in the pharmaceutical industry. He was never one to sit still for long so after retirement he indulged his passion for boating and was happiest when he was on the water.

Mike was a people person who found the good in everyone he met. He was always ready for a party and the more people gathered together the better he liked it. Mike was a true gentleman whose old school manners were on display whether he was at a formal occasion or a back yard washer toss. A gracious and generous man, those he called "my friend" never doubted his sincerity. He was also a dog person who adored his four-footed companions and the feeling was clearly mutual.

Mike is survived by the love of his life, his wife Sally Gattis, a sister Jana Whaley Gregory of Pampa, Texas, 3 daughters Jennifer Garber and husband Mike of Prescott, Arizona, Shantay Gattis of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mary Anna Metaxas of Austin, Texas. His grandchildren include Nicholas and Luke Garber, Kelsey Rodriquez and husband Justin, McKenna Gattis and Ryleigh Corona. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jane Gattis, two brothers Rodger Wayne Gattis, and Gary Don Gattis and a brother in law, Rick Whaley. Sally would like to thank those who helped care for Mike: Frank LaRegina, Kathy Rose, Virginia Clement, and all the care partners at Village Green.

Please join us for a celebration of Mike's life at 3 o'clock September 16 at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas. Visitation will be held between 2:00 and 3:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Village Green, 404 S. Loop 336 W., Conroe, Texas 77304. On the memo line add Alzheimer's Walk/Mike Gattis or any charity of your choice.
